Biofilm formation is a serious problem in a large range of human activities such as human health, industrial manufacturing, drinking water production and distribution, and cultural heritage preservation. Indeed, controlling biofilm is a critical point to avoid nosocomial infections, fouling and corrosion of industrial surfaces, contamination of industrial products, and biodeterioration/biodegradation of cultural heritage materials. Biofilm is a complex biomass organization state comprising cells and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of microbial origin. Thus, an anti-biofilm strategy can target either cells or EPS or both. Biofilm formation is a multi-step process and different steps of the process can be targeted for biofilm control.
This special issue covers studies and reviews about anti-biofilm strategies, and will welcome contributions related to the following areas:
• Cleaning strategies for biofilm removal
• Matrix degrading enzymes
• Biofilm disassembly
• Antimicrobials targeting biofilm cells
• Nanoparticles with anti-biofilm properties
• Antimicrobial hydrogels
• Natural products with anti-biofilm activity
• Bacteriophage anti-biofilm activity
• Physical treatments of biofilms (ultrasound, UV, cold plasma, etc.)
• Anti-biofilm surfaces (anti-adhesive surfaces, antimicrobial surfaces)
• Technical approaches for studying anti-biofilm strategies
