Renewable energy systems include solar (photovoltaic), wind, hydro or marine sources to generate electrical power. Renewable sources are inherently nonlinear, considering their availability (resources), their modelling and their control.
This special issue focuses in any aspect related to the modelling and control or renewable electrical energy systems: grid-connected or off-grid (stand-alone systems). In off-grid systems, electricity storage is needed due to the fluctuation nature of the renewable sources. In grid-connected systems the use of storage is being increased so that the generation curve can follow the demand curve (energy management). Storage can also improve the quality of the power injected into the grid by the renewable systems (power quality management). Different storage technologies can be considered: batteries, hydrogen, supercapacitors, pumped hydro, CAES, etc.
The integration of renewable energy systems in smart grids is also considered in this special issue. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are crucial for the correct management of the smart grid. Optimization of the models and the control is also included, for grid-connected renewable systems and for stand-alone systems.
This special issue will focus on the mathematical models and control in renewable electrical energy systems. It includes the modelling and control of the generators, power electronics to connect the renewable generators to the electrical grid, fault diagnosis, hybrid systems which can also include non-renewable generators (diesel…) and any kind of storage. Thermoelectric generators that convert waste thermal energy (waste heat of the exhaust gasses for example from a stove or an industrial oven) into electricity (Seebeck effect) can also be considered in this special issue, only in the case that waste thermal energy is used.
It can be considered not only the real implementation of the control but also the modelling of the components, the simulation of its performance and control and its optimization. Experimental verification is appreciated but not required. The intelligent modelling, control and operation using advanced artificial intelligence techniques are also included.
