Dentistry has long been a cornerstone of medical practice, with its roots tracing back millennia to ancient Egypt, where Hesy-Re, the first recorded dentist, practiced his craft nearly 4600 years ago. Over centuries, dentistry has evolved from rudimentary techniques to an advanced, technology-driven field. The Renaissance era introduced anatomical and procedural texts, while the Enlightenment saw the birth of modern dentistry under Pierre Fauchard [1,2,3]. Over the years, it has become evident that oral health plays a crucial role in overall health. The significance of interdisciplinary connections and collaborative approaches has surpassed previous expectations, highlighting the need for further exploration [4,5]. The digital revolution has propelled the field into new realms, integrating artificial intelligence, regenerative medicine, and bioengineering to redefine patient care [6,7].
The launch of the Journal of Dentistry and Multidisciplinary Sciences begins because of the need for a Journal about "Odontologia et Scientia." The selection of these terms from Greek "odontologia" (ὀδούς, tooth + λόγος, study) and Latin "scientia" (knowledge or science) is not accidental. It signals a commitment to pursue the highest forms of science and reasoning. This journal represents a pivotal moment in dental and multidisciplinary research, reflecting a dedication to fostering scientific innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and ethical publishing practices. This inaugural editorial outlines the journal's mission to connect clinical dentistry with broader scientific disciplines, embracing advanced technologies and integrative methodologies to tackle complex oral health issues and challenges.
The Journal of Dentistry and Multidisciplinary Sciences aims to establish a global nexus for high-quality, peer-reviewed research across diverse medical domains. Reflecting its etymological roots—odontologia (the study of teeth) and scientia (knowledge)—the journal promotes both traditional disciplines and groundbreaking innovations [8]. The mission is to foster dialogue among clinicians, academics, and researchers, uniting fields such as prosthodontics, regenerative biomaterials, digital dentistry, and oral microbiology.
This commitment extends beyond publishing original research. By embracing various formats, including systematic reviews, clinical trials, and case reports, the journal provides a comprehensive platform for disseminating knowledge. However, each submission must adhere to rigorous scientific validity, reproducibility, and ethical integrity standards—necessary in an era where academic metrics risk overshadowing scholarly substance. The rise of bibliometric pressures and the proliferation of predatory journals underscore the need for ethical vigilance. This project pledges to uphold transparency, mitigate biases, and discourage practices aimed solely at inflating publication counts and citation metrics [9,10,11,12]. Authors, reviewers, and editors share a collective responsibility to maintain the integrity of the academic record, ensuring that every contribution adds genuine value to the scientific community.
The journal explores the intersections of dentistry with broader scientific disciplines. The fields of interest not only generically concern the clinic and surgery but also the biomedical, bioengineering, laboratory, rehabilitative, emotional, educational, and health sciences aspects [13]. The scientific journal aims to evaluate the patient at 360 degrees from all medical points of view and to highlight all those correlations that could lead to a correct therapy, even in patients with multisystemic or syndromic diseases and with early diagnosis. This journal does not exclude contributions in the medical field by all "non-sector" sciences, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, etc.
This signifies a commitment to shaping the future of dental medicine and multidisciplinary sciences. This is positioned as a community aimed at advancing the boundaries of what is possible in oral health care. Together, the focus will be on honoring the field's traditions while embracing modern science's transformative potential, fostering a culture where innovation, collaboration, and integrity drive the progress of dentistry.
