The gut microbiota is a complex and diverse ecosystem of trillions of microorganisms residing in the gastrointestinal tract, playing a crucial role in maintaining hosts' overall health. Microbiome, usually used in the same sense, defines the genes and genomes of the microbiota and has been widely studied in the recent twenty years. This intricate ecosystem, composed of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and archaea, interacts closely with our bodies, mediating the influence of various physiological functions such as digestion, immune responses, and nutrient absorption. The disturbances of the gut microbiome, known as dysbiosis, have been increasingly implicated in the development and progression of various diseases. Research has revealed that alterations in gut microbiota can lead to chronic inflammation and immune responses (autoimmune diseases), like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), as well as metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes. Moreover, multiple studies suggest there is a bidirectional communication between gut bacteria and the central nervous system, often referred to as the “gut-brain axis”. Certain microbial imbalances promote the development of neurological disorders, such as anxiety, depression, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's. Besides the "gut-brain axis", emerging research suggests other connections with the gut microbiome and host major organs, including the "gut-liver axis", "gut-lung axis", "gut-heart axis" etc.


Unraveling the intricate relationships between the gut microbiome and human diseases holds promise for the development of novel therapeutic strategies and paves the way for novel diagnostic tools as well as personalized medications.


In this special issue, we invite manuscript submissions (full-length articles, short communications, and reviews) addressing the pivotal roles of gut microbiota in human diseases.
