Manuscript Topics

Biofilms represent the most predominant mode of growth of microorganisms in natural, engineered and medical habitats. Although microbial biofilms in many engineering and medical settings are detrimental, biofilms in other settings can be beneficial. For example, biofilms can be used as biocatalysts for wastewater treatment, chemical production, and energy generation. While an enhanced understanding of biofilm biology is required to fully harness the power of beneficial biofilms, progress in biofilm research in recent years has enabled the engineering of biofilm-mediated bioprocesses for various environmental, energy and chemical applications.

This special issue intends to cover established and up-to-date researches on natural and engineered biofilms that are mediating nutrient removal or cycling, bioremediation, energy generation, and chemical production. Contributions of both experimental and modelling studies are encouraged.

This special issue welcomes contributions in the following areas
• Characterization/modification of beneficial biofilms in natural and engineered environments
• Surface engineering (e.g., physicochemical modifications) and biofilm formation
• Biofilm-mediated decontamination of environmental pollutants
• Electroactive biofilms for energy generation and chemical conversion
• Biofilms as biocatalysts for production of biofuels, fine chemicals, and high-value products
