It has been almost half a century since Robert May (1972) postulated that ecosystem properties such as stability depend critically on the ecosystem’s complexity. By complexity, he referred to the number of species in the ecosystem as well as the number and strength of the interactions among species within it. Since that seminal work, we have come to realize that many ecosystem properties depend on what we have called diversity. Diversity usually means more than just a number of species – also known as species richness – and includes the relative abundance of species. In the face of global change, we are interested in ecosystem function and goods and services that we receive from the natural world. Relevant research shows that function and services depend crucially on the number of species that an ecosystem harbor. Even more, we now believe that functional diversity is quite important for the continuation of the provision of services that our world needs. Several mathematical tools have been utilized in this line of research.

We invite our colleagues to submit papers related to the study of the effect of different levels of biological diversity on natural ecosystems’ structure as well as properties and function. We especially encourage contributions employing novel methods in the study of relevant questions in this line of research.
