Manuscript Topics
Under ongoing climate changes, it urges an immediate transition to a resilient agricultural production system based on sustainable and organic practices. In this context medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) may be considered important component of the agrobiodiversity able to supply critical ecosystem services to the farming process, such as soil building, nitrogen fixation, nutrient cycling, water infiltration, pest or disease suppression, and pollination, thereby achieving a more sustainable form of agriculture. In addition, MAPs, either cultivated or wild collected, are multipurpose plant sources of numerous specialty materials such as essential oils, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, dyes, colorants, cosmetics, textiles and biocides.
This special issue aims to gather up-to-date knowledge related to the cutting-edge research in the broad scientific area of medicinal and aromatic plants. Covered MAP aspects include, but are not limited to, sustainable cultivation practices, harvesting, drying and processing techniques, germplasm collection and genetic improvement, biodiversity, quality control of raw materials and derived products, morphological, physiological, phytochemical characterization, study of the biological properties of extracts and phytochemicals by in vitro cell-based and cell-free assays, ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology, essential oils and secondary metabolites. The recent advances in chemistry, biology and -omic sciences, which are offering new and interesting insights into MAP research field, are also covered.
