Dear Colleagues,
The phenomenon of overtourism is resulting in a sudden shift in the behaviour of both travellers and residents, with the latter being particularly affected by the negative consequences of mass tourism. These consequences can be economic, environmental, social, or collective in nature. Cities are struggling to cope with the influx of tourists, which is putting a strain on resources. Additionally, the influx of tourists is threatening the value and identity of these places, leading to the displacement of residents from historic centres that are now saturated with economic activities and overnight stays. These effects have also had an impact on the real estate market, resulting in territorial transformation at the urban and housing levels. The development of smart cities should also take tourism and overtourism into consideration. Smart city concepts must be reinforced and investigated considering the impact of mass tourism on different territorial typologies, including metropolises, inland areas, and suburbs.
Strategies for analysing overtourism, such as implementing entrance fees (demarketing) or limiting the number of visits, exist. It is important to maintain a balanced approach from which all stakeholders benefit.
For this special issue, we invite contributions of literature reviews, case studies, and qualitative and quantitative research that stimulate discussion on the main challenges and constraints of overtourism. We encourage sharing of experiences, both positive and negative, from different destinations to create new knowledge on this topic. This will bring out new aspects that promote overtourism, such as the social and economic attractiveness of destinations, as well as low-cost and more frequent travel possibilities.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

5. Policies to reduce or manage overtourism and their success factors
6. Overtourism and social sustainability: social fragmentation and community relations
7. Overtourism and environmental sustainability: transformation of urban spaces
8. Overtourism and environmental sustainability: the effects on natural areas and national parks
