Non-smooth dynamical systems can be divided into three types according to their degree of non-smoothness: non-smooth continuous systems, Filippov systems and impulsive systems with state-dependent feedback control. There are many applications of non-smooth dynamical systems arising from life sciences, including population dynamics (biological resource and pest management programs), virus dynamics and drug treatment (HIV), medicine and pharmacokinetics (diabetes mellitus and tumor control), epidemiology (vaccination strategies), and neuroscience. Although non-smooth characteristics bring challenges to theoretical analyses and numerical simulations, they are usually more accurate and realistic in describing biological systems and may induce richer dynamics. In the field of disease modeling, non-smooth biological systems not only help to characterize various human interventions and control measures, but also provide new ideas and insights for designing more effective treatment strategies.

This special issue will focus on modeling of non-smooth biological systems, developing analytical and numerical techniques, model calibration and validation. Potential fields include but are not limited to:

• Epidemiology
• Virus dynamics
• Pharmacokinetics
• Neuroscience
