Mesenchymal stem cells have been utilized in medicine to treat diseases requiring regenerative processes as well as an adjuvant therapeutic to treat pathophysiological processes of disease. MSCs have been shown to have direct participation in these scenarios either through differentiation and regeneration or through the production of soluble mediators.  Additionally, the host is an active participant potentiating the overall capacity to manage the physiological environment. Research and clinical translation have provided great insight into new directions towards understanding MSCs biology in the context of disease as well as how these observations may lead to harnessed MSC potential for clinical management. In this special issue of AIMS Cell and Tissue Engineering we are pursuing a research and review format of the current “State of the Art in MSCs Contribution to Medicine”.
