Manuscript Topics

The global increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity along with the associated chronic disease risk constitutes one of the most significant public health concerns of the 21st century. The multifactorial nature of these conditions, encompassing biological, behavioral, environmental, and societal determinants, necessitates an integrated approach to prevention and management. Physical activity, and particularly exercise and sports along with nutritional practices have been shown to positively affect individual health trajectories and, therefore, could exert a profound impact on population-level health outcomes. Accordingly, examining the interrelationship between sports, nutrition, and obesity provides a critical lens through which strategies for improving health equity, reducing disease burden, and fostering sustainable lifestyles can be evaluated.

This special issue of AIMS Public Health brings together original research articles, systematic reviews, and perspectives that advance current knowledge on the nexus of sports, nutrition, obesity, and public health. By examining the biological, behavioral, social, and policy dimensions of these interconnected fields, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of both the challenges and opportunities in combating obesity and improving public health through sport and nutrition. The contributions to this special issue, therefore, address a broad spectrum of themes, including but not limited to: the interaction of nutrition, sports and body weight (i.e. concept of energy balance); the effectiveness of physical activity and/or dietary interventions in obesity prevention, weight management and disease risk reduction; the integration of sports and-/or diet-based approaches in community health promotion; and the development of public health policies that create supportive environments for healthy behaviors.

By presenting a multidisciplinary collection of evidence, this special issue seeks to porvide new insights into the ways that sports and nutrition can shape healthier societies. It is our expectation that these contributions will stimulate scholarly dialogue and provide a foundation for innovative approaches that bridge individual, community, and population health perspectives that target a healthy lifestyle and reduce the global burden of obesity and the associated disease risk.
