Manuscript Topics

Due to COVID-19, burnout is currently receiving new scientific attention and is emerging as a condition affecting modern healthcare professionals in the twenty-first century. One of the humanitarian fields that is most impacted by burnout syndrome is nursing. It can be characterized as the syndrome of physical and psychological exhaustion. According to the WHO, nurse burnout is an “occupational phenomenon” and “caused by ongoing workplace stress that has not been effectively managed”.

Nursing personnel, who are dealing with health losses, provide their services under difficult working circumstances, intense time pressure, emotional stress, and frequently, a lack of understanding from the general public. Nurses frequently get a sense of fulfilment from aiding patients who are ill, injured, or in pain.

The development of secondary traumatic stress, also known as compassion fatigue, results from one’s secondary exposure to severely stressful events while at work. It is known as the “cost of care” for health care professionals.

Nurses’ burnout and secondary traumatic stress can make it difficult to offer services and preserve personal or professional ties and have an impact on them, but can also result in less effective patient care.

This Special issue will explore the nurses' new challenges and work-related health problems, mental health of nurses, job satisfaction, secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue and nurse's burnout.

Keywords: nurses burnout; compassion fatigue; mental health; secondary traumatic stress
