Manuscript Topics

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a life-long disability that begins in early childhood and continues throughout the lifespan producing tragic social and economic impacts to society. ASD risk has been shown to be due to both genetic and environmental risk factors in approximately equal proportions. ASD pathophysiology shows involvement of epigenetic modifications, affecting gene regulation. These alterations in gene expression, obtained through DNA methylation and/or histone modifications, result from transcriptional regulatory influences of environmental factors.

This special issue focuses on the molecular mechanisms of ASD, ranging from cellular and molecular pathways responsible for the induction of neuroimmune alterations with emphasis on environmental risk factors, nutritional deficiencies, various toxicants, immunological effects, and pharmaceuticals. Recent therapeutical approaches will be also welcomed.

This issue aims to constitute a comprehensive view on the state-of-the-art on different molecular aspects of ASD, paving the way for future optimal therapeutic management.
