Manuscript Topics

The first three or so years of life are critical times in the development of the intestinal microbiota and associated immune development. Early life events, such as method of birth, feeding type, antibiotic exposure and stress can also influence aspects of the developing microbiota and potentially impact later-life inflammatory and immune related disease.

It is increasingly evident that these early factors may have longstanding impact upon the future health and well-being of the child. This may include altered risk of developing atopic conditions or gastrointestinal disease, and impact upon appetite regulation leading to obesity. The key factors and the mechanisms contributing to these effects are not full elucidated.

This special issue aims to focus upon aspects of the developing intestinal microbiota and the relationships between these processes and future health or disease. We welcome contributions (original research or reviews) focusing on the following or related areas:

• Normal and aberrant patterns of development of the intestinal microbiota
• Characterisation of relevant early life events
• Impacts of early life events upon the developing intestinal microbiota
• Modulation of the impacts of early life events
• Relationships between the development of intestinal microbiota and future health concerns
• Relationships between intestinal microbiota and immune development in the first years of life
• Descriptions of inflammatory, immune-mediated or other diseases in which intestinal microbiota may play roles.
