AIMS Medical Science Journal Special Issue: Biofluid Biomarkers for Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is an insidious, progressive movement disorder that affects the central nervous system. It primarily involves degeneration of neurons, especially those that produce dopamine, and intraneuronal aggregation of misfolded α-synuclein protein. PD symptoms range from its four cardinal signs (tremor, rigidity, slowness in movement, and postural instability) to a variety of dysfunctions including cognition, speech, gastrointestinal, sleep, and perception. Currently, there is no cure for this complex disease. Since neurodegeneration begins years prior to PD definitive motor symptoms, it is a challenge to accurately detect the disease at its preclinical or prodromal stage.Therefore, there is an urgency to develop biomarkers that are objective and quantifiable for early detection and progression of PD. Biofluids are important sources for biomarker development as they can capture biological and chemical contents released by cells associated with a disease and its progression. Besides their development as diagnostics and prognostic tools, biofluid-based biomarkers may also provide new insights for the molecular mechanisms of disease initiation and progression to generate new approaches to slow or stop PD.
