Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is defined as diabetes that is first recognized during pregnancy. Concurrent with the worldwide epidemic rise in obesity and diabetes, there has been an alarming increase in the prevalence of GDM. Interest in GDM is steadily on the rise and it is rightfully so. GDM has far reaching consequences that affect the mother and the infant born to the mother. While most women with GDM regain their norm glycaemic status post-delivery, 30–50% of them develop overt type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) within the next 5 years. More importantly, the rate of progression to T2DM among GDM women is also on the rise.  Studies have shed some light on factors that predict the development of GDM and its progression to T2DM. Unhealthy calorie-dense diets and excessive body weight are among the predominant factors. GDM therefore presents a window of opportunity to intervene and prevent T2DM by manipulating the modifiable risk factors. Therefore, the role of nutrients, diet and food environments in the aetiology and pathogenesis of GDM and its progression to T2DM is of interest to healthcare professionals. This issue will synthesize evidence for the effectiveness of nutritional management of GDM pregnancies for successful maternal and foetal outcomes, as well as the successful long-term management of cardiovascular in women with a history of GDM. Overall, this special issue form AIMS Medical Science will collate the current evidence to support nutritional policies and dietary guidelines to facilitate prevention and management of GDM.
