Manuscript Topics

After musculoskeletal trauma, such as lower extremity fracture, adults [1] and older adults [2] spend a significant amount of their daily routines engaged in prolonged sedentary behaviors. However, changing adults’ and older adults’ patterns of sedentary behaviour and physical activity after an orthopaedic trauma is a complex problem requiring a systematic approach, at the micro (person), meso (practitioner and physical environment) and macro level (hospital management and policies). Therefore, the objective of this special issue is to:

1. provide an overview of the problem (musculoskeletal trauma and activity in hospital and home);
2. discuss contributing factors from the micro to macro-level; and
3. identify potential next steps to advance health service delivery for people after musculoskeletal trauma to maximize recovery.

Potential topics
• A systems approach to addressing the problem (framework)
• Changing behaviors at the patient-level.
• Changing behaviors at the practitioner-level
• Physical indoor environment and physical activity
• Importance of rest-activity balance
• Bone health after musculoskeletal trauma
• Falls in hospital and hospital policies
