Manuscript Topics

Local and Global Climate Change have a very serious impact in the built environment increasing the energy consumption for cooling, increasing the concentration of outdoor pollutants, rising the heat related mortality and morbidity, deteriorating indoor and outdoor thermal comfort levels, and increasing the ecological foot print of cities

To counterbalance the impact of the global and local climate change in cities and other settlements, advanced materials have been developed and are extensively used. Materials for climate mitigation and adaptation can be implemented in the skin of the buildings, around them or in outdoor open spaces. Building materials are mainly focusing in reducing the impact of the outdoor climate on the indoor environmental quality of buildings, while materials for the outdoor environment are mainly aiming to reduce overheating in cities

The aim of this special issue is to present the recent advancements in the field of materials for mitigation and adaptation purposes and provide a panorama of the actual scientific developments
The Special issue welcomes original and review articles on the following topics :
• Materials to decrease the energy consumption of buildings and produce energy like, (insulation and super insulation materials, reflective materials, advanced glazing, optical systems for daylighting, phase change and other storage materials, photocatalytic materials, nanomaterials for building energy use, caloric materials, other related materials
• Materials to fight Urban overheating and improve urban built environment, like (reflective materials, thermochromic and electrochromic materials, materials for radiative cooling, piezoelectric materials, quantum dots and other nano materials, fluorescent materials, retroreflective materials, passive caloric materials, metamaterials for energy harvesting, photonic and plasmonic based materials, other)

The Special issue welcomes articles reporting the development and the performance of new innovative materials, as well as the innovative application and the performance of the materials in real case studies. An analysis of the impact of the materials to mitigate local and global climate change and adapt the built environment should be included
