Theme: Plastic Pollution in Environments
Introduction of the special issue:
Even though the societal benefits of plastic are undeniable, their increasing global production and use have led to the accumulation of plastics in the environment. Indeed, a large part of the plastics produced are used in single-use applications such as packaging (40% of the European plastic demand), which results in a large amount of waste. While a part of the plastic waste is properly managed (through combustion or recycling), it has been estimated that millions of tonnes of plastic waste end up in the marine environment. Their durability makes that they persist in the environment for many years, and because of their low density they are readily dispersed by currents and wind, sometimes travelling thousands of kilometres.

Recent studies on sources, transport and distribution of plastics enable to evaluate fluxes and budgets in different environments. However, data is still lacking before a global estimate can be given. Moreover, although impacts on some organisms (mainly marine organisms) have been reported, more research is needed to support appropriate initiatives to counter other negative impacts on ecosystems.

Articles presented in the research Topic "Plastic Pollution in Environments" will primarily explore:• methodologies to measure and identify plastic contamination in environmental matrices (e.g. microplastics in sediments)
• risks of plastics and microplastics to the environment and humans (e.g. trophic transfer of microplastics)
• toxic chemicals and plastic in plastic waste and recycling streams
• plastic degradation in the environment
• uptake of microplastics
• microplastics acting as vectors for chemicals
