Manuscript Topics
Over the years there has been growing interest in the advancement of schemes such as local energy communities’ as they can tackle energy-related issues such as energy insecurities and shortages in local areas. Local energy communities provide promising schemes expected to promote rural energy production and consumption, aimed at addressing the energy needs of geographically dispersed areas. In general, local energy communities has the potential to improve energy security by minimizing residents’ reliance on non-renewable energy sources, reducing climate change via decarbonization strategies and also delivering economic gains to prosumers.
Moreover, local energy communities can further deliver other socio-economic benefits such as increasing community resilience and community energy engagement and provide income for energy prosumers. Additionally, local energy communities help energy prosumers to manage local resources either via wind turbines, solar panels or cells, and small-scale battery storage system. When well organized, domestic homes in rural areas can form aggregations that cooperatively fosters collective social, environmental, and economic goals by managing renewable energy production and consumption.
Therefore, this special issue covers the deployment of disruptive technologies such as decentralized technologies, blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), advanced virtual reality, digital twins, artificial intelligence and machine learning, cloud services, big data, etc. to support local energy communities in securing affordable and clean energy towards decarbonization to achieve a sustainable energy future. This special issue covers original research, theoretical/conceptual, and review studies related to the topics of local energy communities, particularly including the deployment of decentralized technologies.
