Manuscript Topics

Many leading environmental challenges of the 21st Century are inextricably linked to energy policy choices and growing global energy consumption. These include climate change, the energy-food-water nexus, deforestation, biodiversity loss, urban sprawl, sustainable development, nuclear weapons proliferation, radioactive waste management, growing resource scarcity, among many others. Thus, it is difficult (and ill advised) to develop energy policy without adequately considering the environmental dimensions and implications of decisions made on energy supply and demand. The purpose of this special issue is to report recent research results that directly link energy and environmental policies, both quantitively and qualitatively. Among the topics that could be addressed by potential authors are: sustainable energy transition strategies for addressing global climate change, the role of geoengineering technologies and risk assessment in climate change mitigation, how to address tradeoffs in the energy-food-water nexus, assessment of biofuel/deforestation tradeoffs in climate change policy, the role of smart cities in containing urban sprawl and promoting sustainable cities, sustainable transportation policies, long-term solutions for radioactive waste management, improved regimes for nuclear security, trade policy for rare earth minerals, the future of fossil fuels, among many others.

Keywords: climate change; biofuels; nuclear power; sustainable energy transition; renewable energy policy; waste management
