Manuscript Topics
Scope: A significant proportion of the environmental and sustainability challenges of the modern life are associated with energy generation. These challenges are largely related to the use of fuels for providing human societies energy needs. The main environmental consideration of our current civilisation is the challenge we face with the ever-growing greenhouse gas emissions. The scientific community provides stronger connections between the use of fossil fuels, the atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations and their effect on the climate. Energy generation is also responsible for emissions of priority pollutants to the atmosphere, the acidic gases of SOx and NOx, particulate matter, both fine and coarse particles, CO and heavy metals. These pollutants then contribute to regional air quality through photochemical reactions or acidic deposition. Emissions of trace metals from coal fired power stations, particularly mercury, is now being recognised as another emerging environmental challenge that has global environmental considerations, due to the long atmospheric lifetime of elemental mercury. Science and engineering has instrumental role to play for understanding of the formation mechanisms and emissions of these pollutants and their distribution to the environment, so that effectively measures for their control are planed and integrated.
The aim of this special issue is to collate research findings and reviews in the area of pollution, atmospheric emissions, pollutant dispersion or impacts of pollutants from energy sources. Original research papers and review articles are invited for the following topics:
• Greenhouse gas emissions from energy generation.
• Particles from energy generation.
• Acidic gas (SO2 and/or NOx) formations and emissions from energy generation.
• Air toxics (PAHs, POPs, VOCs and dioxins) from energy generation.
• Trace elements, including mercury and lead, emissions from energy generation.
• Local, regional or global pollution studies from energy generation.
