Plant probiotic bacteria: solutions to feed the World

Introduction of the special issue:

Plant probiotic bacteria represent a heterogeneus group of prokaryotes, which have beneficial traits directed to enhance plant development. Specifically, this kind of bacteria, acting as plant symbionts, enhances plant growth, crop yields and products quality.

Over the last decade, many studies have focused on the isolation of potential plant probiotic bacteria from soil, rhizosphere or plant tissues and also, on their applications and efficiency as single inoculants or as a part of bacterial consortia in several crops, such as cereals, legumes or vegetables and other kind of plants, such as trees or ornamental and aromatic plants .

This special issue pretends to cover established and updated studies about plant probiotic bacteria and their benefits for agriculture and forestry, which will have a direct and beneficial impact on human and animal health and also, will minimize the use of chemical fertilizers, contributing to a more sustainable agriculture and forestry.

This special issue will welcome contributions related to the topic, specially to the following areas:
- New sources for plant probiotic bacteria isolation.
- Taxonomy and systematics in the “genomics” era.
- Role of plant probiotic bacteria in agriculture and forestry.
- Molecular mechanisms involved in the interaction plant probiotic bacteria with their hosts.
- Engineering new plant probiotic bacteria.
- Effects on fruit yield and quality.
- Economical aspects of the use of plant probiotic bacteria
