Nanomaterials for energy and environmental applications

Due to a high surface to volume ratio, significant transport properties, and confinement effects resulting from the nanoscale dimensions, nanostructured materials are extensively studied for energy-related applications such as solar cells, catalysts, thermoelectrics, lithium ion batteries, super-capacitors, and hydrogen storage systems. The additional global demand for energy by 2050 is estimated to be 20 terawatts (TW). With the stringent environmental safety concerns, viable approaches are to utilize photovoltaic energy and to improve other sustainable energy production processes as well as energy storage capabilities. The development of the proposed materials would contribute to the improvement of energy related devices, having a beneficial effect on the climate change-problematic, improving our life quality, and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources. Therefore extensive studies in this field are necessary to accomplish this challenge for the next decades.

This AIMS Materials Science Special Issue on Nanomaterials for energy and environmental applications is intended to cover in a multidisciplinary way the different approaches present in the actual research to improve or design new nanomaterials of interest for a wide range of applications on energy production (e.g., photovoltaic technology, piezotronics, triboelectricity, thermoelectrics…), energy storage (batteries, hydrogen storage, super-capacitors…), and environmental monitoring applications (sensors). The publication is expected to reflect the strong international interactions among physicists, chemists, engineers, materials scientists and technologists working in this field as well as the advantages, limitations and challenges of the application of nanomaterials. Original and review articles are both welcome. The targeted topics include fundamental as well as applied aspects on material design, synthesis, theory and modelling, properties of interest and application of nanomaterials on the energy and environmental related applications. To mention a few topics (but not limited to) related to:

- Advanced semiconductor and oxide nanostructures, heterostructures, novel geometries, and integration for improved electronic, optical, sensing and/or energy generation/storage performance.
- Plasmonic materials/heterostructures for enhanced photovoltaics, photocatalysis, light emitting devices and other energy conversión
- Advanced and in situ-characterization techniques of energy/sensing materials.
- New composites for energy storage
- Bidimensional nanomaterials
