Introduction of the special issue

Rare earths exhibit many unique and diverse physical, chemical, and magnetic properties, due in large part to the complexity of their 4f electronic structure. The special issue will concentrate upon the chemistry, physics, and materials science in lanthanide materials, driven by the 4f electronic structure. Particular emphasis will be placed upon the 4f magnetic structure, magneto-structural transformations and their energy applications. Further emphasis will be given to basic science phenomena, e.g. low temperature spin reorientation, Kondo, heavy fermion, and schottky specific heat anomaly. The fundamental science of rare earth materials and their role in clean energy technologies will be stressed. Both basic and applied science from experimental approaches as well as theoretical modeling and computational simulations are to be part of this special issue.

We intend to invite front-line researchers and authors to submit original research and comprehensive review articles for consideration for publication in a special issue “Rare-earth-based materials” in the AIMS Materials Science. These articles will be published in AIMS Materials Science open access free of charge. Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. All manuscripts will be peer-reviewed before their acceptance for publication.
