Manuscript Topics

An outbreak of pneumonia caused by a novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has emerged in Wuhan, China since December 2019. The virus rapidly spread to other areas in China and foreign countries. As of January 30, 2020, more than 7900 confirmed cases with 170 deaths have been reported in 22 territories. On the same day the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of the novel coronavirus a global health emergency. Mathematical models have played an increasingly important role in predicting the behavior of outbreaks, optimizing control strategies, understanding the immune response and so on. At the current stage, there are many unclear aspects about this novel coronavirus, e.g., the contribution of asymptomatic transmission, the case fatality rate, and the initial source of COVID-19. We believe that modelers can certainly make a substantial contribution to understand the virus and the transmission dynamics of the disease it causes. The journal MBE focuses on new developments in the fast-growing fields of mathematical biosciences and bioengineering. For this reason, we initiate a special issue to collect timely papers on modeling studies from the biological, epidemiological, immunological, molecular and virological aspects of COVID-19.
