Manuscript Topics
Digital images have become an important part of our society. This is not only because image is a powerful and widely used medium of communication, but also because it is an easy, compact, and widespread way to represent the physical world (from macro to micro). The acquisition, distribution, integration, interpretation and manipulation of images are inevitably affected by physical degradations, and therefore need elaborative care so as to guarantee the image quality and processing efficiency. Mathematics plays an essential role in almost all of image processing tasks. The most sophisticated developments in mathematics can help us obtain a better understanding of images, and develop new representations as well as effective and efficient algorithms capturing fundamental properties of image sources. As a result, a variety of mathematical theories and techniques are now widely applied to image processing and analysis tasks. This special issue will devote to mathematical methods in imaging sciences. The topics shall include, but not limited to, variational methods, PDE methods, multiresolution analysis methods, higher-order accuracy discretization methods, convex and nonconvex optimization methods in various problems in imaging sciences such as image denoising, deblurring, inpainting, segmentation, registration, medical imaging, computer vision and so on. Papers with focus on biomedical applications such as computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine and photoacoustic tomography are equally welcome.
