Manuscript Topics

Bacteriophages (phages) have a variety of potential biotechnology applications, from human or animal health, to industry, food science, food safety, and agriculture. Despite known for over a century, phage exploitation, as alternative antibacterial agents, are relatively recent and driven by the increasing rise of antibiotic resistance.

Advances in sequencing technology and molecular tools has enable the characterization of novel phages. Moreover, the field of research has been gradually moving to the modification of phages and their encoded proteins to generate new and improved products through genetic and protein engineering techniques. This new era has been delivering promising results and clues to overcome the limitations of native phage and their encoded enzymes.

This special issue aims to focus upon all aspects of the developing novel phage-inspired biotechnological applications. We welcome contributions (original research or reviews) focusing on the following or related areas:

• Phage-host interaction studies that may help the development of future phage biotechnological applications

• Characterization of novel phages against relevant bacteria
• Application of novel phage-derived proteins (e.g., receptor binding proteins, endolysins, depolymerases)
• Modification of bacteriophage properties through synthetic biology
•Improvement of phage-derived proteins activity through engineering
