Manuscript Topics

Since the launch of Landsat-1 in July 1972, numerous national and private space-based Earth Observation (EO) satellites have been launched. Using the vast amount of the EO data, substantial progress has been made on deriving timely and reliable information to support environmental monitoring, urban planning, land and water resource management, [human and natural] disaster assessment and mitigation, climate change modeling, among others. This special issue intends to bring together a volume of high quality papers that highlights progress, challenges and opportunities of satellite remote sensing.

Submissions on the following topics are invited on one of the following themes (with subtopics given as examples for clarification) :

• Agriculture and Food Security: Sustainable agriculture: agricultural monitoring; estimation and prediction; global food production: area and yield forecasts; food security and vulnerability; plant diseases; desertification.
• Atmosphere, Weather and Climate: Monitoring atmospheric trace gases and parameters; weather information and understanding; weather forecasting and warning; monitoring, and adapting to climate variability and climate change.
• Energy and Geology: Monitoring resources of renewable energy; sustainable use of energy and energy resources; mitigating effects on the environment in exploring energy resources; exploration and exploitation of non-renewable energy resources and minerals.
• Forests, Biodiversity and Terrestrial Ecosystems: Understanding and monitoring biodiversity; use of remote sensing in vegetation dynamics and plant community ecology; management of terrestrial ecosystems; monitoring forest cover and biomass; understanding forest contribution to the carbon cycle; tropical deforestation; forestry and forest management; wildfires and use of remote sensing in evaluating the use of prescribed fire.
• Human and Natural Disasters Monitoring, Warning and Response: Understanding risks through long term monitoring; disaster mitigation and alert; supporting disaster response and post-disaster recovery and build-up activities.
• Hydrological Applications: Understanding the water cycle; water resource management; water bodies as a sustainable resource for fishery, transport and tourism; biodiversity in water bodies; inland water quality; underground water sources, etc.
• Land Use and Land Cover: Land use planning; vegetation management; urban planning; land degradation and desertification.
• Marine and Coastal Environments, Resources and Dynamics: Understanding and monitoring marine and coastal biodiversity; the marine environment as a resource for food, energy, transport and tourism; ocean dynamics and parameters; maritime traffic and oil spill monitoring.
• Polar and Cold Regions: Understanding and monitoring polar and alpine biodiversity; the polar oceans; glacier, ice, and snow monitoring; transport and resources exploitation in the polar environment.
• Socioeconomic Issues including Health, Urbanization and Human [Cultural] Heritage: Man and environment; monitoring, understanding and predicting man-made and natural parameters, affecting human health; monitoring urbanization and understanding socioeconomic issues; man in history, culture and world heritage; archaeology and remote sensing.

In addition, papers are encouraged to highlight how the following are used in the above-listed topics :

• Image processing, analysis and classification
• Multi-temporal analysis
• 3D remote sensing
• RADAR Data Processing and Applications
• LiDAR Data Processing and Applications
