Manuscript Topics
The ocean (blue) economy is gaining increasing attention due to the burgeoning recognition of the role coastal and marine resources play in the global economy. By 2030, the value added by the ocean economy is expected to increase from 1.5 trillion USD in 2010 to 3 trillion USD, and provide up to 40 million jobs (OECD, 2016). Beyond these economic opportunities, the blue economy also protects and develops traditional ways of life, coastal resilience and carbon sequestration in the face of climate change. Conversely, the blue economy and associated sectors are highly dependent on resilient ecosystems and communities to provide services that drive activity. Therefore, climate needs to be prioritised within the context of the blue economy, given the interdependencies between them.
This special issue will highlight the synergies between ocean-based activities and climate change, through policy responses, and innovative adaptation and mitigation approaches. In this regard, we welcome papers that explore integrated and holistic approaches to ocean and coastal management with specific climate change themes. Furthermore, emphasis should be made on improving research design and knowledge of blue resources at stake in the face of a changing climate and the interdependencies between marine, aquatic and terrestrial domains, particularly with regards to blue technology.
