Manuscript Topics

We invite researchers to submit original research or comprehensive review manuscripts for consideration for publication in a Special Issue “Living organisms on innovative substrates and materials” in AIMS Bioengineering. Submitted papers should not be previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. All manuscripts will be peer-reviewed before their acceptance for publication.

Generally, we are interested in diverse combinations of unusual substrate structures or materials with living organisms for a broad range of possible applications, from tissue engineering to algae harvesting or vertical farming. Potential topics to be covered by the Special Issue include, but are not restricted to, the following:

• Development and testing of new substrates for growth of living organisms, e.g. prepared by electrospinning, 3D printing or other uncommon methods.
• Development and testing of new materials for growth of living organisms, e.g. new coatings for increased cell adhesion, improved stem cell differentiation and proliferation.
• Embedding and release of micro- and macro-nutrients.
• Growth and adhesion of human or animal cells, plants, microalgae, bacteria or mushroom mycelium on unusual substrates and materials.
• Technical applications of diverse living organisms on new substrates, e.g. to support cell proliferation for tissue engineering or to prepare mushroom mycelium grown in desired shapes.
